JUPITER, Fla. (AFP-Jiji) — As the northern hemisphere edges toward spring and millions flock to the beach, headlines have dubbed the southeastern U.S. state of Florida the world’s most likely place to be bitten by a shark.

They’re right, but, at the same time, shark bites are exceedingly rare overall — a fact scientists wish more people knew, especially amid declining shark populations desperately in need of conservation.

“When the sharks in the water are targeting the fishes that they normally feed on, once in a while, people get in the way and the sharks make a mistake,” said Gavin Naylor, coauthor of a recent report tallying last year’s shark attacks.

北半球が春に向かい、何百万もの人々がビーチに押しよせるなか、新聞の見出しには、米国南東部のフロリダ州は世界で一番サメに襲われやすい場所との文字が躍っている。それは事実だが、全体としてはサメに襲われることは、実は稀なことだ。サメの個体数が激減し、保護する必要が高まる今、科学者たちが大衆にどうしても知ってもらいたいことなのだ。

「サメが普段から常食にしている獲物に狙い定めるなか、たまたま人が入り込んでしまうことで、サメが間違えることがある」と語るのは、ギャビン・ネイラー。昨年のサメの襲撃回数をまとめた近刊の共著者だ。
